Chastain Pummels Peachtree City
Atlanta, Ga (AP) --- On a balmy 90 degree day made for tennis, Chastain blanked Peachtree City 5-0 Saturday morning in front of several fans to jump to an early division lead.
The day started out with two quick points at #4 and #5 as Peachtree City defaulted both spots to the teams of Foglesong/Kistulinec and Breckenridge/Williamson. While no formal reason for surrender was provided to the league office, unconfirmed rumors indicated Peachtree City players were struck by "unbridled fear" when they got word of the Chastain lineup. Jeff Breckenridge shrugged off the forfeits, saying "We've been known to have that effect on teams," while Kistulinec noted "A-8 is easy." As a result of the victories, both duos begin their quest for a golden season with perfect 12-0 records in games played.
At #3, Callen/Lofgren used a potent combination of aggressive net-play and sizzling groundstrokes to dominate their opponents. Callen stalked the net like a wild animal while Lofgren, coming back from season-ending knee surgery last year, pasted forehands at their opponents as they cruised 6-2, 6-3. When asked about the win, Callen cryptically replied "Go Blue."
The duo of Sullivan and Mikysa steamrolled the #2's 6-4, 6-3, setting a Chastain single-match record for most balls leaving the park (including those leaving on the bounce and the fly). At last count, Chastain players and fans tracked down some 17 balls before die-hard teammate Chris Knight finally told Sullivan to fetch his own balls.
At #1, Methvin/Harris won a tough first set 6-4 before settling into a groove to win the second set 6-2. Harris credited their second set success to Methvin's decision to focus on hitting forehands rather than blowing kisses to his girlfriend.
On a day this good, you would have expected no complaints from the Chastain team. However, a great team is never satisfied, and Jeff Sullivan shared some of his team's disappointments: "We really need to work on the refreshments. We ran out of beer way too early today, and we made a critical error by not bringing a bottle opener to the courts. Plus Harris has got to get his car battery fixed."
A true test of Chastain's mettle is just around the corner next Saturday. Facing their arch-nemesis, Morehouse, Chastain seeks revenge against the team that eliminated them from the playoffs last year. Winning in the hostile confines of Morehouse, however, is far from easy, but co-captain Erik Mikysa hinted that last year's meeting may have been an important experience for this team. "They're a good team with lots of loud, obnoxious fans coming out from everywhere-the sidewalks, the bushes, the dormitories. But this year, 'Hollywood's' ready."
